Car hire excess explained
If you hire a car and it's damaged or stolen, car hire excess insurance covers you for the excess costs you have to pay the rental company. The excess amount you're liable to pay depends on the company you hire from, but it's normally between £500 to £2,000.
For example:
You're driving a hired car on holiday and accidentally clip the edge of the road, damaging the car's paintwork and puncturing a tyre.
The damage costs £750 to repair, and the rental company you hired the car from charges an excess of £500.
You have to pay the rental company £500, and they will cover the remaining £250.
If you had purchased Coverwise annual excess insurance for one driver at £29.95, you could have claimed with us to get a reimbursement of £500 for your excess.
In this example, the total amount you save by purchasing our Car Hire Excess Insurance in advance is over £470.
Car rental companies will offer you excess insurance at a high price when you pick up your rental car, normally between £10 to £20 per day. They also exclude cover for parts of the car which are most likely to get damaged in an accident, such as the windows, roof and undercarriage.
Coverwise Car Hire Excess Insurance can be purchased for a fraction of the price, from just £2.95 per day or £29.95 for a whole year of cover.
In addition, we include cover for all the commonly damaged parts of a car within the benefit limits, up to £7,000 per vehicle rental.
